Mitsubishi WD-65838 65" 3D Home Cinema TV 4.8 5 299 299
LCD, LED/LCD, Plasma and Others left in the dust! When I considered upgrading to 3D after seeing the 2009 Avatar movie at IMAX 3 times with my girlfriend, I started to scrap the idea of getting a straight Blu-Ray player and wait for the price of 3D Blu-ray players to go down. At the same time I had intended to wait for my old CRT HDTV to go bad and then replace it with a 3D ready HDTV. Well, in early November of 2010 I came across a great deal for a new 3D Blu-Ray player that supported the several different 3D technologies so I got it and started my on-again/off-again research for a 3D ready HDTV. After several weeks of research and viewing LCD, LED/LCD (back-lit and edge-lit) and Plasma sets in all kinds of sizes, makes and models I still was not satisfied. Unfortunately, I could not find a DLP set to look at so I had only comments and specifications to use. Since my new Blu-Ray player could output the checkerboard technology, I had no problem in compatibility with any of the current 3D methods used for the HDTV sets. I finally decided that a good minimum size for 3D was 65 inches, something that would be cost prohibitive except for DLP sets. The final decision was to take a chance, sight unseen, and order a Mitsubishi DLP set, this WD-65838 model with the 16 speaker system through an online seller I routinely use and is very good. The necessity of replacing the lamp (user replaceable) every so often and possibly the colour wheel eventually (also user replaceable, I believe) was not a restricting problem and far more cost effective than costs associated with repairs on the LCD, LED/LCD or Plasma sets. The Mitsy set arrived as expected on 6 Jan 2011 and I set it up that weekend--on the existing stand used for my old 30" CRT HDTV. I have not been disappointed--the size is perfect and is so much lighter than my old set that required a custom reinforcement of the stand. I probably could have gone to the 73-inch model, or even the 82-inch model, but I would have probably violated the law of diminishing returns. The picture quality and colours (6 colour processing is used instead of only 3 or 4) are great for 2D and using the DLP Link shutter glasses I purchased the 3D is absolutely fantastic!! Even very close up, the pixels are extremely difficult to see, unlike sets using the other technologies. Speaking of shutter glasses, Mitsy wisely included an IR link connection using the IR based shutter glasses. I opted for the DLP Link based reading about problems with IR link glasses having interference problems with remote controls and some forms of lighting (mostly fluorescent). In addition, the purchase of the IR equipment is not needed for using DLP Link glasses so there is a cost saving. I do not see any signs of the rainbow effect that I have read about. Viewing and listening from the recommended 8 foot minimum distance is like being in a mini-IMAX theater. As for not being wall mountable, big deal--the stand I already had and am using puts the set up about where a wall mountable unit would be plus I can move everything around anytime I wish, unlike wall mounted units. I hope Mitsubishi does not stop making these sets. Retail stores are doing their customers a disservice by not putting these sets out for display even though available for purchase. Thanks to Mitsubishi using the Texas Instruments technology to create great sets I now have a great mini-IMAX in my house. March 19, 2011
Great picture and sound! We got this just in time for Christmas 2011. Our first 3d movie was one I didn't think I would like; a dancing movie, but the 3d was so incredible I felt like I was actually part of the cast. I've watched it twice already. We have about 15 3d movies and like them all. I just wish there were more available as we have everyone I've seen for sale. Most of our tv watching is just plain old dvd's and some blu-rays, but they all look good on this Mitsubishi DLP 3d tv. June 5, 2011
